West Bengal: Family of four ‘commits suicide’ after girl becomes pregnant

Police suspect all the family members took the drastic decision to avoid the social stigma arising out of the pregnancy of the unmarried daughter.

All four members of a family were found hanging in their home in Hooghly on Thursday because the unmarried girl in the family was reportedly pregnant.

Police identified the deceased as Rabin Pandit, 45, Kalpana Pandit, 40 and their son and daughter - who, police say, was pregnant.

The girl was around 19 and her brother was a student of class XI and aged around 17.

Police have arrested Ranjan Pandit, a cousin, who they suspect of being in a relationship with the girl. Officers summoned him to the Chanditala police station where he confessed to the relationship.

Police say they found Ranjan’s name written on the hand of the pregnant girl’s brother along with an explanation that he was the reason behind the family’s drastic step.

The incident took place at Chanditala, about 25km from Kolkata.
