Talking to Hindustan Times, Salim said, “For government employees, polling duty is an unwanted job, which they are compelled to do. They perform their job with sincerity despite many odds.On completing their duty, they are fatigued. It is an experience similar to returning from war. So I decided to give them some at least some moments of joy in recognition of their laborious task so that they could return home with a cheerful mind.”

The district magistrate added, “I am very happy that the polling personnel have accepted our gesture in true spirit despite their fatigue and stressful task.”

According to sources, the card and chocolates were given to officials when they handed over the ballot boxes.

Nazir Mondal, a polling officer at 94/2, Sahapur Primary School of Kaliganj said, “This is a great gesture. I am a veteran of many elections. I have never seen this before. It’s a great honour for us to get a thank you card. The chocolates were excellent. I ate 6,” Mondal added.

For Zahir Molla, Monday’s election was his first. “I was sent to a booth, close to the IndoBangladesh border. I ate all the chocolates when returning home by bus.” He added, “I will keep the card as a souvenir. The gesture moved me and will inspire me in the days ahead.”

Ajmain Mondal, a poll official at Bahirchara Primary School of Nabadwip block in Nadia said, “It is a good initiative. It will encourage me to perform better in the next election.”
