Senior citizens form unique group to tackle loneliness
For many, old age is a time to be spent with loved ones. But those senior citizens who have no such luck need not feel lonely or fear spending their last years alone. For a unique venture is now in place to tackle loneliness among the elderly by inspiring them to keep connected.
For many, old age is a time to be spent with loved ones. But those senior citizens who have no such luck need not feel lonely or fear spending their last years alone. For a unique venture is now in place to tackle loneliness among the elderly by inspiring them to keep connected.

A dozen enthused citizens in the age group of 20-65 years have come up with a new group called ‘Baghban’, gardener in Hindi, to create a forum where baby-boomers meet, interact, form bonds and work together to combat their loneliness by spending time together.
“Our motto is to create a platform where the elderly overcome their inhibitions and reach out to others their age, who are in a similar situation,” Baghban founder Mridula Mittal said.
“It’s not that all our members feel neglected by their families and children, but they do feel lonely. Instead of just spending their time by themselves, through our weekly and monthly events the elderly can get to know each other and feel valued,” said Mittal.
As part of its debut programme, titled BaghbanPhulwari, garden in Hindi, held at a high-rise residential building in Tangra on Sunday, the group brought together over a hundred elderly and young people and bonded together.
