"Ganguly has been in touch with us over the past few days after the controversy began. He has written to us requesting us not to make him the brand icon. Therefore, we decided not to use the promotional featuring him, to respect his sentiments," Akshay Raut, EC's director general (information, education and communication) said.

Raut, however, said the EC has high regard for the national icon and had not found anything objectionable against him as had been alleged by the Trinamool Congress. "We have instead decided to use a promo featuring the captain of the World Cup winning team Mahendra Singh Dhoni and former President APJ Abdul Kalam."

The promos prepared during the Jharkhand elections, were also used during Bihar polls.
