"Two companies of CRPF posted in Darjeeling have been withdrawn from the hills from September 10 despite request by the West Bengal government for their extension," Home Secretary Samar Ghosh told reporters here.
The law and order situation in Darjeeling is now being looked after by the State Armed Police (SAP), he said.
Asked whether the withdrawal of the central forces was due to coming Assembly elections in Bihar or the deteriorating situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Ghosh said it could be for some other reason too.
