“We welcome the demand that Rahul contest the election from a seat in south India as well. He should accept the demand and respect the sentiments of partymen of south India too. The people of Amethi are enthused and they support Rahul. We will ensure a landslide victory to him from Amethi Lok Sabha seat as well. He just needs to come here to file his nomination papers,” said District Congress Committee, Amethi, president Yogendra Mishra after the resolution was passed.
Rahul represents Amethi seat in Lok Sabha while UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi is MP from Rae Bareli. Both Amethi and Rae Bareli are considered to be Congress’ bastion in Uttar Pradesh.
Rahul won the seat first in 2004 and then in 2009 and 2014 and has been declared a candidate from the seat for 2019 polls too. The Congress’ Kerala unit has requested him to contest the poll from Wayanad Lok Sabha seat too, also considered to be a party’s bastion in Kerala.
Mishra said Rahul would win with a huge margin both in Amethi and the other seat and become next Prime Minister of India.
“Former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, too, had contested the polls from a seat in the south as well as in north India,” said Mishra.
Indira Gandhi had contested and won the poll from Chikmagalur in 1978 and Medak seats in 1980 besides Rae Bareli. Sonia had contested and won from Bellary in Karnataka in 1999 besides Amethi.
The Congress’ frontal organisations of Amethi, including Seva Dal, Indian Youth Congress, NSUI and All India Kisan Congress also passed similar resolutions.
