The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) Kirron Kher is the sitting MP after she defeated senior Congress leader Pawan Kumar Bansal by nearly 70,000 votes in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Bansal had held the seat from 1999 before being ousted by actor-turned-politician Kirron Kher.

Bansal, a former railways minister, had won the seat for the first time in 1991 against the BJP’s Satya Pal Jain.

Chandigarh, one of earliest planned cities of the country, is going to polls in the seventh and last phase on May 19 and votes for the Lok Sabha election 2019 will be counted on May 23.
