The recent discussions between Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati and Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav have centred on resolving key issues to ensure the alliance is able to score a 1993-like victory when it had upset the BJP’s applecart in Uttar Pradesh, a BSP leader privy to the matter said.
The issues figuring in confabulations between the two leaders are: a plan to end the discord between party workers, resolving disputes over candidates, transferring votes and ways to fine-tune the campaign strategy.
The duo has held four meetings since January 4 to discuss the Lok Sabha election campaign strategy and seat-sharing formula. The BSP leader familiar with the discussions between the two leaders said they were focusing on ending the continuing conflict between the Yadav and Jatav community members, who have been at loggerheads when the parties have been in power from 2007 to 2017 (BSP 2007-12 and SP 2012-17).
Both the leaders have decided to organise joint workers’ conferences at the booth level in all the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies to foster harmony between the two communities, the BSP leader said. They have urged the party workers to sink their differences to win power at the centre. While Mayawati has activated the bhaichara (brotherhood) committees and directed party office bearers to hold meetings at all the district and divisional headquarters, Akhilesh has asked the district SP office bearers to attend the meetings organised by the BSP. The SP leaders have been also told to invite the BSP leaders to their meetings. She had drawn Akhilesh’s attention to unresolved issues and suggested methods to iron out the differences. She has also directed her party’s zonal coordinators to change their strategy by organising bhaichara committee meetings in Yadav-dominated villages.
An SP leader said since Mayawati was a senior politician, Akhilesh was giving her due respect. Rather than inviting the BSP chief to his residence or office, he had visited the 9 Mall Avenue residence of Mayawati to discuss the election strategy, the party leader said. He was taking her suggestions seriously and getting them implemented, the SP leader added.
Even as the BSP and the SP are finalizing candidates, both the leaders are working to smoothen things with regard to half-a-dozen seats in west and east UP.
Akhilesh told Mayawati the SP workers might oppose the BSP candidate finalised by her for the Sultanpur seat.
He urged the BSP to shift this candidate to another seat.
As some SP leaders were keen to contest on the seats allotted to the BSP and vice-versa, Mayawati assured Akhilesh she will look into the matter. She has postponed the release of the list of her party candidates.
