The Kaushambi police on Wednesday thwarted an attempt by miscreants to free the prime accused in deputy SP Zia-ul-Haq’s murder case while he was being escorted to Pratapgarh district court from jail, police said on Wednesday.
Cops arrested nine miscreants and recovered three unlicensed rifles and a pistol from their possession, SP Kaushambi Pradeep Gupta said.
Gupta said Gulshan Yadav, a former chairman of Kunda and a close aide of Independent MLA Raja Bhaiyya, is the prime accused in Zia-ul-Haq’s murder that took place in March 2013.
Yadav was recently shifted from Pratapgarh jail to Kaushambi district jail.
On Wednesday Gulshan was to be produced before the court. At around 9 am cops left the district jail in the prison van with Gulshan for Pratapgarh. The van had barely left the jail premises when some SUV- borne persons surrounded it from all sides. A Scorpio and Safari came in front of the prison van while a Fortuner and a swift desire car positioned themselves at the back of the vehicle. Sensing trouble, cops immediately informed senior police officials.
Swinging into action, Manjhanpur Kotwali police barricaded Osa crossing and surrounded the youths.
Nine youths were caught and identified as Ashutosh Dwivedi, Chandra Prakash Singh, Amir Khan, Rajkumar Yadav, Dheeraj Verma, Rohit Kumar Yadav, Jamuna Prasad, Sanjeev Kumar and Chandrakesh Maurya.
Gupta said the youths belonged to Pratapgarh and had come to help Gulshan Yadav escape from the prison van.
“The same persons had tried to surround the prison van on Tuesday as well while it was taking Gulshan to Pratapgarh. However, the van returned following the threat. An FIR has been lodged against the youths and further investigations were on,” Gupta added.
