The Mayawati government has decided to seek CBI inquiry into dowry harassment case against Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh and his family members.

The Secretary Home Javeed Ahmad told journalists in Lucknow on Monday that a formal letter seeking CBI probe would be sent to the central government soon. "The issue is under active consideration of the government," Javeed Ahmad said.

The government seems to have taken the decision because of FIR against Arjun Singh. The Moradabad police that registered a case against the minister and his family members have been investigating the matter, Ahmad said.

Madhvendra Singh of Chandausi (Moradabad) also known as Raja of Narauli, had lodged a FIR against Arjun Singh and others for harassment of his daughter Priyanka Singh by her in-laws. Priyanka was married to Arjun Singh’s grandson Abhijit Singh. The police had registered the case on the order of additional chief judicial magistrate (Chandausi) Nityanand on July 29, 2007. The case has been registered under section 323, 324, 325 and 498 IPC and section 3 & 4 of Dowry Prohibition Act.

According to FIR other accused in the case are Arjun Singh’s wife Bina Singh, son Abhiumanyu Singh, grandson Abhijit Singh, Aaradhna Singh (sister in law), Dalip Singh and Mandhakni Singh.

The SSP Moradabad Prem Prakash told Hindustan Times that inspector SP Singh (Chandausi) had been deputed to investigate in the case. According to the investigating officer he visited the house of the complainant on July 29 and 30 but both complainant (Madhvendra Singh) and the victim (Priyanka) were not cooperating in the investigations. The inspector said "their statements could not be recorded so far". It is learnt that the witnesses Prem Pal and Dilshad (mentioned in the FIR) are also evading the police.

As per the FIR Priyanka Singh was married to Abhijit Singh on February 19, 2006 and her parents had spent around Rs 60 lakh on her wedding. However Priyanka’s in-laws started pressing for more dowry including a Mercedes Car and a flat in New Delhi. The accused, according to the FIR, except Arjun Singh, visited the victim’s parental house in Chandausi on July 8 at about 7.30 pm and beat her up inflicting injuries. Her medical examination report indicated the injuries including fracture.
