The starting fare will be 15 for the first two kilometres followed by 8 for each kilometre thereafter, the official said.

“We have got bikes registered as taxis and trials for the same are done,” said Shonali Chakravarty, lead policy communication, Uber India that will be providing bike taxis via app.

The bike taxi service will also be launched in Kanpur the same day. Kanpur and Amritsar will become cities where bike taxi has been launched before the car service.

A bike taxi takes 75% less space than a car, can move 25% faster in any traffic condition and the fare is lower, the official said.

A colour code for the bike taxis has been decided so that they remain distinct from the private two-wheelers.

The vehicles will not be more than two years old. As per the proposal, the vehicle owner will pay a registration fee and also follow all rules under the motor vehicle act.

Introduction of bike taxis is expected to be beneficial for single passengers who do not have luggage. The bikes will move in the city limits only.
