Uttar Pradesh BJP invites triple talaq victim to join party
A Bareilly-based triple talaq victim, who has been very vocal against the practice, has been approached by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with an offer to join the party.
“A senior woman Bharatiya Janata Party leader of the region called me and asked me to join the party over phone a couple of days ago. I am yet to decide on joining the party,” Nida told HT on Thursday.
Confirming the proposal, Bareilly’s BJP president Rakesh Rathore said, “BJP is with every person who is fighting against the malpractices in our society. BJP has always been vocal about the fight of Nida Khan and women who are suffering like her. Such people are always welcome in the party.”
According to party sources, senior party leaders of the region are debating the issue and will take a final decision in this matter.
Nida, 23, who was married into the family of renowned Barelvi cleric Ahmed Raza Khan, was reportedly separated by her husband using instant triple talaq in 2015. Nida has approached the court against this and continues to fight her case.
She came into spotlight recently after a local Barelvi cleric issued a fatwa against her, announcing that she be ousted from Islam for questioning practices like triple talaq and halala.
An MLA from Bareilly on condition of anonymity said, “Nida Khan can provide a Muslim face to the party in the region. Nida can propagate the message of our party among her community and that will surely benefit the party.”
