A group of women attacked a police team with chilli powder when the latter had gone to arrest a rape accused in a Bakshi Ka Talab (BKT) village on intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. The women also beat up the cops and managed to free the accused from their custody.
The injured police team later called up for additional police force and arrested three women for attacking them and freeing the accused from the custody after registering an FIR in this connection.
The incident took place when a police team led by two sub-inspectors, Nepal Singh and Nripendra Pratap Singh, along with eight police constables raided the house of one Ashish Kumar in Asti village of BKT at around 1.30 am on Wednesday. Ashish is accused in the case of elopement of minor girl, rape and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Udaiveer Singh, inspector of BKT police station said the police team had arrested Ashish and was about to leave the house when they were attacked from behind by a group of at least six women of his family. He said the women first threw chilli powder in the eyes of the cops. Thereafter, the women pulled down the cops on the ground and attacked them with canes and rods. Taking advantage of the situation, Ashish fled from the spot, he added.
He said the two sub-inspectors suffered major injuries while other team members saved themselves somehow. He said three women were arrested by other team members while three others escaped along with the rape accused.
Singh said villagers were not allowing the police team to take away the arrested accused following which extra police force was sent at the spot. He said the three women were sent to jail after registering a complaint of attacking the police team and freeing the rape accused from their custody. He said those arrested were identified as Savitri, Ruby and Kamla while efforts are on for the arrest of remaining three women and the rape accused.
