In a road rage incident, a 53-year-old man died allegedly after altercation with two men on a bike in Dahisar (east) in the early hours of Monday. Police officials said his injuries appear minor, but based on eyewitness accounts that the victim was beaten up, they have registered a case of murder and booked the bikers.
The Dahisar police, who are investigating the case, are now waiting for the autopsy report to confirm the cause of death.
The fight took place late on Sunday night when the deceased, Yashodhar Shetty, a resident of Borivli (west), was heading towards Dahisar check naka with two friends in an auto-rickshaw after watching the Indian Premier League (IPL) finals.
“Shetty was drunk. When the auto stopped a little ahead of Dahisar check naka and the friends were just about to alight, a bike rammed into the three-wheeler. Furious, both the auto driver and Shetty went up to the two men on the bike,” a police official said, requesting anonymity.
The two men on the bike were drunk too, and they got into a heated argument during which Shetty was roughed up. “Shetty started throwing up on the spot. A police patrol van arrived at the spot as there was a lot of commotion and people had gathered,” the official added.
Shetty was taken to Bhagwati hospital in Borivli (west), but was declared dead on admission.
“We have registered a case of murder. Further probe is on,” said Vinay Rathod, deputy commissioner of police, zone 12.
“The exact cause of death will be known only after we get the post-mortem report, after which appropriate action will be taken,” Vasant Pingle, senior police inspector of Dahisar police station, said.
