The girl, Rohini Jaysingh Singh, was playing outside her house in Pimpripada, Malad. The incident took place between 8.30pm and 8.45pm, officials said.

Rohini had stepped out to play when she walked towards the ditch around four to five feet deep.

Rohini slipped near the ditch and fell inside. The local residents were alerted and rushed to her rescue. The girl was pulled out of the ditch and immediately rushed to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivli.

The girl was declared dead at 9pm at the hospital.

“The ditch in the ground was left uncovered and got filled up with rainwater. We have filed an accidental death report,” said L Vhanmane, senior inspector at Kurar police station.

The Kurar police have ruled out foul play in the matter. They have recorded statements of the girl’s kin after the incident.
