The BMC issues two property tax bills — one for the April-September period and the second, for the October-March period. Under the scheme, citizens who pay the tax before June 30 will get a 2% concession on the first instalment, and a concession of 4% on the second instalment. For you, this means if you pay both bills before the deadlines, you can get a rebate of 3% on an average.

If both instalments are paid after the June 2017 deadline, in July, taxpayers will get a 1% rebate for the first instalment and 3% rebate for the second.

Only citizens with no outstanding amount against their names are eligible for the rebate under the scheme, civic officials said.

“The purpose of this scheme is to reward citizens who have been paying taxes on time,” said a senior civic official from the assessor and collector department.

The BMC has been offering the rebate since 2014. Last year, the BMC’s concession totally amounted to Rs11.80 crore to those who paid their tax early — 89,000 citizens benefitted from the scheme last year and BMC had collected Rs1,000 crore.

This year, the proposal for the scheme has been tabled in the standing committee for approval, which could come on Friday.
