The Central Bureau of Investigation, opening its arguments to frame charges against Peter Mukerjea, his wife Indrani, and Indrani’s former husband Sanjeev Khanna for their alleged roles in the murder of Indrani’s daughter Sheena Bora on Monday, pointed to the many motives there were to murder Sheena.

Sheena was allegedly murdered in 2012, but the case came to light in 2015, after Indrani’s driver Shyamwar Rai was arrested. The case has been in court for more than a year.

The CBI told the court on Monday while there were many motives, the two key issues were Sheena’s relationship with Rahul, Peter’s son from an earlier marriage, and Indrani’s problems with Sheena.

The CBI’s special public prosecutor, Bharat Badami, told the court Indrani killed Sheena as she was worried about Sheena being identified as her daughter and of her other daughter Vidhie’s share in Peter’s property.

“Indrani was worried about her social status — what will happen if Sheena, who was her daughter, became her daughter-in-law? This would have also affected the share of property owned by Peter, as Sheena as a daughter-in-law would have got a share,” Badami argued.

On Khanna’s role in the case, Badami said he was ‘spiderman’, for his quick visit to Mumbai to allegedly execute their plan. The lawyer emphasised about how Peter was aware about the entire conspiracy.

“These days, even when dogs go missing people lodge a complaint. So how did he not do anything? He was powerful and knew some top cops. When his son was telling him to do something about Sheena’s disappearance, he did not take any step,” Badami said. Peter did not do anything for three years until Rai was arrested, Badami said.

While Badami was presenting his arguments, Indrani who was sitting on a wooden bench behind the chairs for lawyers, started noting down her points for defense.

When Badami pointed out Vidhie was given a large amount as monthly pocket money compared to Sheena, Indrani said, “Vidhie was just 8 years in 2005, and money was transferred for tax planning”.

When the prosecution brought up the fact that Peter’s property was also a motive, Indrani noted that “75% of the property is in my name and only 25% is on Peter’s. Why would I kill Sheena and not Peter. The 25% property in Peter’s name has already been willed to me”.

The special public prosecutor also pointed to email conversations, messages and calls exchanged among the family, and are now part of the charge sheet, to point out how the accused were involved in the murder.

Every time the prosecution made a strong statement, Indrani and Peter exchanged looks. The arguments on charges would continue on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the CBI provided a detailed statement to the accused that accused-turned-witness Shyamwar Rai gave to the central agency last year . The 10-page statement gives a detailed description about how Rai, Indrani and Khanna killed Sheena and also speaks of their attempt to eliminate Indrani’s son Mikhail Bora.

Indrani’s father death

News about the death of her father came as shock to Indrani Mukerjea. On Monday after the hearing, Indrani learnt that her father Upendra Kumar Bora died on Thursday and his last rites were performed on Friday. As the news came, Indrani broke down outside the court and was first consoled by Peter and later by Khanna. Meanwhile, Indrani’s lawyer Gunjan Mangala complained to the court that Indrani was not informed about the death of her father.
