Ephedrine haul: A year on, Thane court may decide today whether Mamta Kulkarni is an absconder

A sessions court in Thane is likely to decide today whether former actor Mamta Kulkarni should be declared an absconder in connection with the Rs2,000-crore ephedrine drug haul case.

What we know about the drug haul
On April 13, 2016, the police arrested two people with ephedrine worth Rs12 lakh and later busted a racket worth Rs2,000 crore at Avon Pharma Life Sciences factory in Solapur.
So far, 14 people have been arrested, including Kishoresingh Rathod, the son of a former MLA.
Five of the accused are abroad, including Mamta Kulkarni
Three accused — Jay Mukhi, Rathod and Vicky Goswami — carried out hawala transactions worth crores, said police.
“It has been a year since the racket was busted. Kulkarni’s husband, Vicky Goswami, was arrested by the US drug enforcement agency in Kenya. However, she is still on the run. We suspect that she left Kenya and are trying to trace her, said a police officer.
