Girl jumps off from sixth floor of hostel, cops suspect exam jitters

A 22-year-old student committed suicide by jumping off the sixth floor of a girl’s hostel in the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) campus located in Powai on Thursday morning

A 22-year-old student committed suicide by jumping off the sixth floor of a girl’s hostel in the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) campus located in Powai on Thursday morning.

According to the police in Powai, Mumbai, the incident occurred around 7.30am. The deceased, Surabhi Gupta, jumped off the sixth floor of her hostel.

Officials said the student had an exam on Thursday. She and her roommate were about to leave the hostel premises, when she asked her friend to go ahead saying that she had forgotten her key. Then she committed suicide. It was the hostel janitor who head a thud and alerted others. The sweeper heard a loud thud and informed others.No note has been found. An accidental death report has been taken down.

The police suspect the girl was tensed with the beginning of her exams. Probe is on to find out if there is any foul play. The body has been sent to a government hospital for autopsy. The police are checking her call details to find out the possible reasons for the suicide.

The police are trying to contact her family.

A Chennai resident, the girl was staying here for about a year. She had completed her graduation and was pursuing a postgraduate diploma. It was a two-year course and this was her first year into it. She had joined the institute in June this year. Her profile on a social networking website says that she had worked as a programme analyst trainee at a technology firm in Chennai for a year and only recently moved to Mumbai to pursue higher education. She had graduated from the Arignar Anna Institute of Science and Technology in 2015.
