Man drives his scooter into rain-swollen pond, drowns near Mumbai; pillion rider feared dead

The body of his 32-year-old friend who was riding pillion is yet to fished out

The Vasai fire brigade recovered Akash Rai’s body and his Honda Activa from the pond on Wednesday morning.

Unable to spot the dead end of a road in Vasai, a 26-year-old man drowned after he drove his scooter into Manickpur pond late on Tuesday night. The body of his 32-year-old friend who was riding pillion is yet to fished out.

Inspector Anil Patil of Manickpur police station said the visibility in the area was low because of downpour and power cut, which may have led to the accident

The Vasai fire brigade recovered Akash Rai’s body and his Honda Activa from the pond on Wednesday morning. The Manickpur police have registered a case of accidental death.

Rai and Rajesh Bhosale (32) are from Veer Savarkar Nagar, Vasai (West). A police officer said the pond was overflowing owing to incessant rain since Tuesday. They had last called their family and told them they were heading home, said Michael Lopes, in-charge, Vasai fire brigade.

The Manickpur police are waiting for a post-mortem report to ascertain whether the biker was drunk

“The body of Akash Rai was found floating in the pond. Bhosale is still missing,” said Lopez.
