The Mumbai crime branch arrested a man from Uttar Pradesh who has been accused of fatally shooting his neighbour after the latter’s buffalo was caught grazing in his field. Vinod Dubey was hiding in Mumbai for three months in a rented house in Thane area after committing the crime in his hometown in UP.
The complainant, Shyam Prasad, a resident of Barhalganj area in Gorakhpur, UP alleged that his cousin Shyamnand Harbu’s buffalo was grazing near Dubey’s field. When Sudhir, a 10-year-old boy from Harbu’s house went to retrieve the buffalo, Dubey abused, kicked and punched the child.
After hearing Sudhir’s screams, Harbu went to see what was happening. He got into an argument with Dubey following which the latter’s two associates Manish Dubey and Ramesh Dubey also got involved and a fight ensued.
Vinod was carrying a revolver at the time and in a fit of rage, he shot Harbu. He then went to the local railway station and boarded a train to Mumbai. In the city, he rented a room in Thane, said a crime branch officer.
The Gorakhpur police received a tip that he was in Mumbai. A Mumbai crime branch team brought him to the unit office on Tuesday and he confessed to the crime during interrogation. Gorakhpur police were informed and Dubey was handed to them for further investigation, said police inspector Sandesh Rewale of unit 4.
