According to the FIR, the complainant is social worker Sundari Thakur of Nari Samman Sanghathan (NSS, Women Respect Foundation) based in Versova, who received the video from a Versova resident. In the video, the accused, Surendra Vaid, can be seen torturing his mother Mayadevi. His wife Babita is seen helping him while the daughter is allegedly recording the clip. Mayadevi was into sanitary work and all her family members too are in the same profession. They are residents of a building in Shitladevi Sahakari society on the new Andheri link road.

Thakur has stated in the FIR, “A person is trying to strangle her and she is struggling to get him off her. To ensure she does not escape, a woman is holding her legs tightly and another woman was shooting a video on her phone. The act was inhumane and extremely provocative. In another video, the old woman’s legs were tied to a fan with a saree. The man is then seen catching her legs and spinning her on the floor. I was extremely shocked by watching the video. ”

The FIR has been registered under sections 354 (criminal force on a woman outraging her modesty), 342 (wrongful confinement), 336(act endangering personal safety of others), 506 (criminal intimidation), 223 (Escape from confinement or custody negligently suffered by public servant), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 34 (common intention) of the IPC.

The son has been sent to police custody for a day while the two women have been sent to judicial custody by Andheri’s magistrate court. The accused claimed before police that they have never scared or hit her before this. This was the first time and it was because she keeps leaving home and getting lost. They wanted scare her so she doesn’t leave home again. The video was said to be shot in July. Police sources said the victim’s elder son has passed away and the younger son, Surendra, has been taking care of her. It is learnt that the family has four flats in Andheri West.
