Jogawat is diabetic and weighs 180 kg, which is 24 times what his body mass index should be, said doctors from Mumbai, who evaluated him on February 26.

During the civic polls, Shobhaa De had tweeted a picture of Jogawat with the caption, ‘Heavy police bandobast in Mumbai today!’.

Soon after, Dr Muffazal Lakhdawala, a bariatric surgeon from Saifee Hospital, met Jogawat with his team.

Doctors said the surgery will not cut all of Jogawat’s flab. The inspector is expected to lose at least 80 kg over the next 18 months without having to maintain a special diet.

Jogawat’s colleague told HT that the inspector has been fat-shamed before. “He is good at his work. It is not nice to make fun of obese people,” he said.
