Retired Mumbai civic engineer and wife booked by anti-corruption bureau

The anti-corruption bureau registered a disproportionate assets case based on either complaints or traps

A 64-year-old retired sub-engineer of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and his wife were booked for amassing wealth, disproportionate to their known sources of income.

The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) has registered a case against Keshav Sakharam Utekar, 64, and his wife Sunita, 60.

“Keshav was serving in the civic body from November 1976 to June 2011,” said an ACB officer. “Keshav and Sunita allegedly amassed ₹38.94 lakh during this tenure, which was more than 41.15% of their known sources of income,” he said.

The ACB received a complaint against the Utekars after which, the investigation was initiated.

They registered a disproportionate assets case based on either complaints or traps. ACB officials started going through the financial and property details of the government servant.

If the amount exceeds the known sources of income, a case with regards to disproportionate assets is registered.

Subsequently, if any family member is found to be a beneficiary, then they too are booked in the case.

The Utekars have been booked under Sections 13 (1) (e) and 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988, which pertain to misuse and abuse of power, along with section 109 ( Punishment of abetment) of the IPC.

Across the state, the anti-graft body has registered 35 such cases in 2015, 17 cases in 2016 and 22 cases last year.

Till May 9 this year, the ACB registered seven such cases.
