The police said the girl slipped into depression and her mother spotted serious behavioural changes in her.

Nine men allegedly blackmailed and repeatedly raped a 15-year-old girl for more than a year in a chawl in Vile Parle. Six have been arrested. The accused used an intimate video to blackmail her, police said. The girl recently told her mother, who filed an FIR on Saturday.

The police said all the accused are known to the girl, live in the same locality and are aged between 20 and 25 years, except for a 30-year-old, whose mother is an ex-corporator and with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The accused would threaten the minor girl saying his mother had political connections and the police would not take action against him. In the FIR, police have applied a section of criminal intimidation.

The police said the rapes began with one of the accused taking the girl to his house where he showed her a pornographic video. He then forced himself on her while his friend shot a video secretly, police said. The friend then allegedly used this video to blackmail and rape the girl. The duo circulated the video among the rest of the accused, police said. All the accused raped the girl on multiple occasions until this month, police said.

A police officer, privy to the investigation, said: “All the nine accused have raped her. Some raped her twice, some thrice.” Two weeks ago, the girl’s health deteriorated. The police said she had slipped into depression and her mother spotted serious behavioural changes in her. When the girl realised the rapes would not stop, she confided in her mother.

A police officer said, “She is mentally unstable. On Monday, she will be subjected to multiple medical tests. Five policewomen will be with her. We are also trying to get a good counsellor for her. We will produce her before the Child Welfare Committee on Monday, which will decide if she should continue living with her parents.”

A FIR was registered on Saturday under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections for rape, voyeurism and criminal intimidation. The police have also applied sections of IT Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). The accused were produced before a sessions court on Sunday and have been remanded in police custody till February 12.

Parag Alavani, BJP MLA from Vile Parle, said: “The mother of one of the accused was our candidate during the civic elections held last year. She has not asked for any intervention in the case, and we can’t even think of it. The boy does not hold any post in the party.”
