The Central Railway (CR) has closed the level crossing gate (LC gate) at Thakurli station for the second time this month, directing motorists to take the newly built railway over bridge (ROB) instead. However, electrification work is still under process on the ROB and the bridge is not open for vehicular traffic.

The LC gate at Thakurli station is one of four LC gates on the main CR line which affect the punctuality of train services daily. Therefore, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) constructed a new ROB adjacent to the LC gate. Commuters have been fuming though, as authorities have neither opened the ROB nor closed the LC gate permanently.

“This shows lack of planning among the authorities. There is no proper communication between the railway and the civic body. Ultimately the commuters are suffering. The bridge has been ready since the last four months,” said Vijay Salvi, 45, a motorist who uses the level crossing regularly.

The civic body, however, claimed that the railway officials did not inform it about the maintenance work of the LC gate.

“We did not receive any intimation from the railway officials regarding the closure of the gate. The ROB should not be used by vehicles as it is risky because electrification work is still remaining,” said Pramod Kulkarni, city engineer, KDMC.

The railway authorities failed to explain the reason behind closing the LC gate without any intimation given to the civic body.

After repeated attempts, the railway authorities failed to explain the reason behind closing the LC gate without any intimation given to the civic body and also asking the motorists to take the incomplete ROB.

A railway officer on requesting anonymity of name said, “In any ROB project the first condition that is applied is to close the level crossing. It was already discussed with the civic body that the crossing will be closed once the ROB is ready. We have closed the level crossing temporarily for the maintenance work. The further decision to whether open or close the crossing will be taken by the railway authorities.”
