Two boys on their way back from a tuition class drowned in a pond at Rabale on Tuesday.
The police said the boys, both 14, were at Rabale to meet a teacher with some of their friends.
On their way back, around 3pm, the group decided to stop near the pond and play in the water for a while.
The pond is on the Thane-Belapur highway and close to the Rabale MIDC police station.
“None of the boys knew how to swim. Two of them, Sonu Gupta and Sachin Saroj, ventured into the water, but in just a few minutes, they started drowning,” said Chandrakant Katkar, senior police inspector at the police station.
“Some residents who had gathered at the spot by then said they saw one more boy who was standing on the bank slip into the water,” Katkar
“A few of the locals were able to save this boy, but the other two had drowned by then,” he said.
Fire brigade officials were called. They said they found the boys’ bodies a few hours later. They were taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared them dead.
“Their bodies were sent to NMMC hospital in Vashi for a postmortem and then sent to their families,” Katkar said.
