Versova bridge to be shut for two weeks

The Versova creek bridge on the busy Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway 8 will be shut for at least a fortnight, according to sources, after authorities from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) detected cracks on a section of its girder.

The Versova creek bridge on the busy Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway 8 will be shut for at least a fortnight, according to sources, after authorities from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) detected cracks on a section of its girder.

The bridge will be completely closed from 15 September, but light motor vehicles (LMV) hadbeen issued a speed restriction of 20 kmph from last Sunday.

Heavy motor vehicles have been banned from crossing the bridge and have been diverted via Chinchoti (Vasai) and Bhiwandi,while LMVs have been ordered speed restrictions of 20kmph, meant for north-bound traffic towards Gujarat and Delhi, and the bridge will be completely shut from 15 September,said Shashi Bhushan, a senior NHAI official. “Until the bridge is repaired, the adjacent new bridge meant for Mumbai (south-bound traffic) will be used for both north and south-bound traffic,” said Bhushan,
