MUMBAI: Law and BEd colleges in the state are bracing for an incomplete term as the government’s first-ever attempt to conduct admissions for these courses through a common admission process (CAP) has delayed the academic calendar.

The colleges won’t be able to start classes before October, although the process is likely to be further delayed.

This year, for the first time, the government decided to conduct a Common Entrance Test (CET) for five-year and three-year LLB courses. The state constituted a CET cell to carry out entrance examinations. However, according to officials the cell failed to stick to its initial timetable due to administrative and legal hurdles.

The government managed to conduct BEd and LLB CETs, but there was a delay in displaying the merit list for Law CET. “We had the merit list ready on the day results were declared, but we couldn’t display it because many students had selected wrong categories. We gave them a chance to rectify,” said an official.

The government is now compiling the database of participating colleges.

“If the admission process takes three-four months when will we teach? It’s unfortunate and the students will have to suffer,” said a college principal.
