BMC, Bombay Gymkhana at loggerheads

MUMBAI: Bombay Gymkhana, a 141-year-old SoBo club that hosted India’s first test match in 1933, is once again at loggerheads with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over parking issues.

A special time-bound approval was issued to the gymkhana by the civic body so that its members could park their vehicles on the MG Road footpath. Though the approval expired on July 15, gymkhana members continue to utilise the footpath for parking purposes. “We will write to the traffic department to take action against the illegal parking,” said a senior civic officer. With civic body deciding against giving a parking extension and wanting a part of the gymkhana land to widen the Hazrimal Somani Marg that leads to CST, both the parties are now at warring ends. To ensure members don’t create a ruckus, civic body would write to the collector to hand over the gymkhana land.

When contacted, an office-bearer from the Bombay Gymkhana refused to comment.
