MUMBAI: The standing committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday passed the controversial proposal to widen the Hazarimal Somani Marg that connects Fashion Street to CST. Simultaneously, the civic body also wrote to the collector to acquire the entire road for undertaking a widening project that will cost the civic body about Rs3 crore.

The approval comes in the wake of a long-drawn battle between the BMC and the Bombay Gymkhana, whose land will be needed for the project. The BMC also wants to reclaim 82 spots on the MG Road it gave to the gymkhana — for parking purposes — for relocating hawkers from Fashion Street. However, the move hasn’t gone down well with the 141-year-old Gymkhana. The civic body said that the road widening project will be executed in two phases.

A senior BMC officer from A-ward said, “We will be meeting the collector to explain him the situation.”
