MUMBAI: The Mumbai police and crime branch units have stepped up their intelligence gathering in the city following the Uran incident. Their focus is now on the slums and lodges that house the city’s floating population. Investigators said this is because there are no filters to verify the people who come and stay there.

The crime branch units have alerted their informers network in the slums and crowded areas of the city to find out if any new residents have moved in recently.

“If we find foreign nationals staying here, we are verifying the ‘C’ forms of such people with the help of the special branch to check if their presence in the city is on police records. We are verifying the documents of Indians that are new to such pockets,” said a police officer. The police are conducting surprise checks in all lodges and low-end accommodations, where identification and document verification norms are not followed.

The state police chief submitted a status report on the incident to the home department on Friday.

Sources said the state was informed of the precautionary steps that are being taken and there being no development in the manhunt.

“The police and other agencies are conducting searches in Uran. There is no need to panic.,” said Satish Mathur, state director general of police.

“As far as the Indian Navy is concerned, operations based on yesterday’s sightings of the suspected terrorists are over. Naval areas have been sensitised. The navy is liaising with the police and other agencies for further developments,” said Commander Rahul Sinha, defense spokesperson.
