MUMBAI : A drunk pillion rider, Kartik Shetty, allegedly assaulted a traffic constable, Vishnu Joshi, for stopping their bike and questioning them about riding triple seat and without a helmet in Borivli on Thursday.

Shetty, who had gone out drinking in the northern suburbs on Thursday evening, was waiting for lift. A biker riding a Bullet, who was travelling with a pillion rider, offered to drop Shetty.

Joshi spotted the trio on SV Road near Borivli railway station around 7.30pm. When Joshi started questioning them, Shetty got off the bike and allegedly started beating him up. “He held his collar and punched him,” said an officer from the Borivli police station, adding Shetty was drunk at the time of the incident.

“Our constable stopped them as they were riding triple seat and without a helmet, which is blatant violation of traffic rules, but the trio assaulted him. The case is being investigated,” said Ramchandra Dhawale, assistant commissioner of police, north (traffic).

Joshi suffered injuries to his leg and was taken to a nearby hospital. The police said he was discharged after treatment.

Passers-by intervened and caught Shetty and alerted the Borivli police about the incident, after which he was taken into custody. The other two accused on the bike, however, managed to flee. Shetty, a resident of Borivli, was produced before a metropolitan court on Friday and has been remanded him in police custody till October 8.

Datta Padsalgikar, commissioner of police, tweeted through his official Twitter handle on Thursday, “Two is company, three is offence #DontTriplerideOnBike.” Even the Mumbai police twitter handle tweeted: “If you are riding more than two, our cameras won’t miss you! #CCTVChallan #ItCouldBeYou”.
