The scam took place between 2001 and 2003, when the BMC purchased grease from a private company for Rs2,784 per kg, without calling for tenders. The standard rate in the market was Rs71 per kg. Fadnavis said, “Currently, the inquiry committee has been able to recover only 20% of the amount lost, which I am not happy with. There cannot be leniency shown to the corrupt. I have directed Mehta to levy severe penalty on them.”
