MUMBAI : A 45-year-old Gujarat resident, Sharmilaben Patel, died after a fall while trying to board Saurashtra Express, which was pulling out of platform number 6 of Borivli station, on Sunday evening.

“Shocked by the incident, she suffered a heart attack. She was rushed to Dr Ambedkar Hospital, but was reported dead on arrival,” said the police.

The police could not confirm whether she fell into the gap between the footboard and the platform or on the platform.

The railway officials said the height of the platform is 900mm and the platforms are designed for suburban trains which have low-floor doors, leaving little gap between the footboard and platform. “We checked the height and other dimensions of the platform. They are per the recommended parameters. Apparently, the woman was trying to board a moving train,” said Mukul Jain, divisional railway manager (DRM) Mumbai division, Western Railway (WR).

In the past, several commuters suffered injuries after falling into the gap between the footboards of the trains and platforms, after which the railways took up a project to increase height of platforms.
