MUMBAI: A 28-year-old man attempting a house break-in at Napean Sea Road died when he tried to escape from residents who had spotted him.

The Gamdevi police said Mehboob Sayyad, a Malabar Hill resident, entered a residential building at Malabar hill around 4am on Sunday, but was spotted by one of the residents.
When the resident raised an alarm, Sayyad panicked and began running. Several people gathered and began chasing him.
“As it was dark, the accused could not see where he was going. He ended up jumping on some rocks, losing his balance and injuring himself,” said an officer from the Gamdevi police station.
The locals took advantage of this and started assaulting him, the police said.
“Sayyad was taken to JJ hospital, where he was declared dead. We are waiting for the post-mortem results, but preliminary reports suggest he died from internal injuries on his chest caused by the fall,” said an officer.
The police have, however, registered a case of murder under the Indian Penal Code against unidentified people, as Sayyad was assaulted even after his fall.
