Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the number of cases dropped, although the city received more rainfall last month (1,700mm) compared to last June (799mm).

“The cases are on the decline. While there were 15 leptospirosis deaths last July, this year we have recorded four leptospirosis deaths so far,” said Dr Padmaja Keskar, the city’s executive health officer.

Dr Rajan Naringrekar, insecticide officer, BMC, said the department was conducting drives to check mosquito-breeding sites.

Last year, 820 cases of malaria were recorded, compared to 583 cases this year.
