Stepmother booked over toddler’s death in Antop Hill

MUMBAI: The Antop Hill police have booked a 24- year- old woman in connection with the death of her 18-month-old stepdaughter, who died at Antop Hill on Friday.

According to t he police, Rabiya Shaikh was rushed to Sion Hospital by her stepmother Raziya Shaikh, where she was declared dead.

The police have booked Raziya under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) after investigations revealed that the toddler was assaulted by her

The incident occurred at Bangali Pura slums in Antop Hill.

“Raziya was furious over the child crying constantly, and she was fed up of her,” said T Vasant Patil, senior police inspector, Antop Hill police station.

On Friday around 9.45am, when Rabiya was crying, a furious Raziya grabbed her and pushed her. “Rabiya’s head hit a wall, which resulted in grievous injuries,” said Patil.

The toddler sustained injuries on her head and back. Raziya is the second wife of Rabiya’s father and has two children. Police said t hat Raziya did not like the child as it was from her husband’s previous marriage.

She had falsely claimed to the police that Rabiya fainted and fell, following which she took her to hospital. However, the police felt something suspicious as there were injury marks on t he child’s body. After sustained investigation, Raziya admitted to have assaulted the child. “We will arrest her,” said Patil.
