MUMBAI: It’s time to bring out your umbrellas and raincoats as the weather bureau has predicted heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours. But Mumbaiites will still have to deal with the 20% water cut at their home for at least another month, as rain in catchment areas of the seven lakes, which supply water to the city, hasn’t improved the water availability.

The availability of water in the seven lakes is 6% of the total capacity. The total capacity of the seven lakes is 14.47 lakh million litres, while the available water stock is 0.96 lakh million liters, compared to last year’s 3.32 lakh million litres.

The week could also begin on a rough note for many office-goers as heavy showers on Sunday disrupted train services and caused traffic snarls in several parts of the city.

The downpour on Sunday resulted in waterlogging at 12 locations across the city. And although the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) used pumps to drain out the water, areas such as Parel, Dadar TT and Hindmata, among others, witnessed flooding.

The India Meteorological De par t ment ( I MD), meanwhile, predicted heavy showers. “There is a distinct offshore trough between south Gujarat and Kerala and upper air cyclonic circulation in south Gujarat, which will lead to heavy rain across Konkan, including Mumbai ,” said VK Rajeev, director, western region, IMD.
