The Kasturba Marg police on Thursday arrested a Jogeshwari resident for stealing Rs 29 lakh from a godown in Borivli on July 17. One of the accused is still untraceable.
The officials said that the care-taker of the area was busy cooking food in his cabin, when the incident took place.
Manish Gala, the owner of the godown registered a complaint with the police.
The initial investigation revealed that Jaiprakash Pandey (32), Gala's driver, went missing two days after the robbery.
"This raised our suspicion and we started looking for him," said Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Thakur of Kasturba Marg police station. Pandey had been working with the complainant for ten years, the officials said.
Since the police couldn't trace Pandey and his wife and kid, they detained his brother-in-law Sunil Upadhyay (30) for questioning.
Initially, Sunil claimed that he knew nothing about the incident but later he confessed of having stolen the money from the godown along with Pandey.
Sunil, a driver, told the police that they did a recce of the godown and on July 17 they entered the godown with duplicate keys. They broke opened the cupboard and stole the cash.
"The accused had to find just Rs 1-2 lakh inside the cupboard. But it was like a jackpot for them on finding so much of cash," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone 12) Rajendra Dabade.
The police have recovered most of the stolen amount and two police teams have been formed to trace the accused who is absconding.
