A sports utility vehicle (SUV) crashed into a bike on the southbound stretch of the Amar Mahal flyover in Chembur, killing two on a bike on Wednesday evening. While the driver managed to flee, he was arrested later based on the registration number of the car provided by an eyewitness.

The car rammed into the bike from the rear end, flinging the duo — Suraj Ghavale, 20, and Rohit Yadav, 19 – on the opposite side of the flyover, where they were run over by another
vehicle. They were taken to the hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival, police said.
The car belongs to a businessman, who runs a factory in Navi Mumbai. The incident took place when the driver was allegedly returning home after getting the car from Madhya Pradesh. The police are unclear about the sequence of events and who was behind the wheel at the time of the incident.
“The driver escaped, but a biker who witnessed the incident followed him and got the registration number of the SUV. He then gave us the details,” said a police officer from Tilak Nagar police station.
The police got the details of the car owner from the regional transport office (RTO) and arrested the driver, Irfan Shaikh, on Thursday night. “We are checking the closed circuit television cameras at the toll plaza to ascertain if Shaikh was driving,” said the officer.
