Those externed are from zone 11, which has nine police stations, including Kandivli, Malad, Goregaon and Borivli. “Politicians often employ criminals. If they are kept away, the chances of violence is lessened,” sources said.

At a special meeting on Friday to review the security arrangements, the police commissioner appreciated the action initiated by Mahesh Patil, deputy commissioner of police, zone 11.

Sources said that 10 days ago, Patil issued directions to police stations in his jurisdiction to compile a list of criminals. A list of 400 criminals, whose offences range from assault to murder, was drawn up. The police then caught hold of 240 of these criminals and booked them under section 151(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The criminals were produced in batches in court, which ordered their externment from their localities until the elections were over. All zones have initiated action, but the maximum action has been taken by zone 11.
