“He had removed his slippers and was sitting on the window when he lost balance,” said Senior Inspector Balasaheb Pachundkar.

One of the residents found Hemdeo lying unconscious in the compound while he was passing by.

“The resident immediately alerted the watchman after which the police were informed around 7.15 am,” said an investigating officer.

The other members of the family — his mother, wife and a 10-year-old son were sleeping when the incident occurred. “As the smoke would have disturbed their sleep, Hemdeo was smoking outside his house,” said Police Inspector Dilip Raut. The police have registered a case of accidental death and do not suspect any foul play.

“We have taken down the statements of the family members. They do not suspect any foul play,” added Pachundkar.
