A 21-year-old law student, Karishma Balaji Rao, crashed her car into three stationary autorickshaws in Juhu on Monday morning, injuring seven people. While one of the autorickshaws crashed into an adjacent tea stall, the car finally came to a halt after ramming the pavement. Rao, who lives in Oshiwara, was arrested by the Juhu police for causing injuries due to rash and negligent driving, and will be produced in court on Tuesday.
Rao had seen off her father at Santacruz airport and was on her way back home when the accident occurred at Gulmohar Road, near ONGC Colony, Juhu around 9.30am, according to the police.
The impact was so great that Rao was trapped in the car and had to be pulled out.
Inspector Ashok Pimple from Juhu police station said: “Rao was speeding and lost control over the vehicle. Prima facie it does not appear that she was driving under the influence of alcohol. However, we have conducted medical tests to ascertain whether there was any alcohol content in her blood.”
Some people present at the spot called the Mumbai police control room, which alerted the Juhu police about the accident. The victims have been identified as Sandhya Lokhande, 22, Shamshul Haq, 25, Rajesh Kakreja, 22, Gundaji Kamble, 50, Jaywant Chorghe, 50, Prakash Kadam, 30 and Vijay Kumar Baba, 45.
