Nine persons were booked for spreading rumours about spotting a 'gang of thieves' on Monday night. The accused have been identified as Shashikant Jadhav, Sachin Mhaskar, Dilip Vaifakar, Vishal Rokde in addition to five others.

Apart from the case at Navghar, the Mulund police have registered four cases under section 505 (b) of the IPC that relates to statements conducing to public mischief with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the state or against the public tranquillity.

Assistant commissioner of police (Mulund division) Mahedeo Gundewadi said: "Since the rumours have already resulted in one person being beaten up, we have warned anti-social elements against creating unwarranted fear in the minds of people."
