Ahead of the monsoon, 90% of the road repair work in the city has been completed and most arterial roads have been made pothole-free, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) told the Bombay high court (HC) on Wednesday. The civic body has assured the HC that the remaining work will be completed before the onset of monsoon.
The submissions were made when the court was hearing a suo motu public interest litigation on the pothole-ridden roads in the city and the poor condition of the eastern and western express highway, which leads to traffic snarls especially during the monsoon.
During the previous hearing, a bench of justices Shantanu Kemkar and MS Karnik had asked the BMC to ensure potholes are repaired on an “urgent basis” this year.
According to the compliance report submitted by BMC counsel Anil Sakhare on Wednesday, the BMC has started two 24-hour toll-free helpline numbers and a mobile application for citizens to lodge complaints related to bad roads and waterlogging.
The bench has now directed the BMC to advertise the grievance redress mechanisms through newspapers, hoardings, and electronic media. The HC has suggested the BMC conduct a meeting with MMRDA, PWD and other civic agencies to take stock of their monsoon preparedness.
