In a major breach of prison security, 1993 bomb blast accused and extradited gangster Abu Salem was shot at inside Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai on Thursday night. Salem escaped with minor injury to his right hand.
Devendra Jagtap alias JD, a former aide of deceased gang leader Bharat Nepali, had allegedly shot two rounds at him. While one grazed Salem’s hand, the other missed him.

Ironically, Salem was shifted to Taloja after he was attacked by Dawood aide Mustafa Dossa at Arthur Road jail.
There are two theories doing the rounds on how JD got the firearm — while initial reports said he could have procured the weapon during his visit to a court during the day, Kharghar police sources said he had already brought the weapon and had kept it with him for some time in the jail.
According to sources, the rounds were fired in an open area near the jail mess at around 8pm. Salem and JD had an altercation a few weeks ago over the protection money which is allegedly collected from jail inmates, they added.
