Police suspect the accused broke into the apartment of Nandkumar Mhetre, which is on the third floor of Rajgraha housing society at Four Bungalows in Andheri (west) in the afternoon. The recently redeveloped building only has a few occupants.

Police said, the accused decamped with gold ornaments worth Rs2 lakh, Rs2,000 in cash, Mhetre’s service revolver and his 0.32 calibre personal revolver and some important documents including his passport, all of which was kept in his cupboard.

Mhetre realised his house had been robbed when he returned from duty on Thursday night. His two daughters were also at work when the incident took place. He then approached the Amboli police and lodged a case with them.

“We have registered a case of house break-in and theft against an unidentified person,” said senior police inspector H Vhatkar.

Police suspect workers from a nearby construction site work to be behind the theft. The watchman on duty at the time of the incident and those of neighbouring societies are being questioned.
