Thirty-three people, including six women and three children, were injured in the mishap.
The driver of the truck, Jagdish Devkar, was drunk when the mishap took place, the police said.
“The medical test has confirmed that Devkar was drunk at the time of the incident,” said Senior Inspector Ambadas Gadade of Bhoiwada police station. “He has been booked for rash and negligent driving.”
The victims, residents of PMG Colony, were members of Jai Durga Navratri Mandal in Mankhurd. They were part of the immersion procession and had gone to Girgaum Chowpatty.
The driver is also a resident of the same area.
According to the Bhoiwada police, the accident took place around 1.15 am on the flyover near Chitra cinema.
“Devkar was drunk and he lost control of the vehicle that caused the accident,” Gadade said.
The truck, ferrying the victims, was on it way to Mankhurd from Girgaum Chowpatty when the accident took place.
“As the truck ran over the divider, a few people who were standing went overboard, landing on the road,” said Gadade. “The others lost their balance, dashing against another and sustained minor injuries.”
All injured were taken to KEM Hospital in Parel
“While four of them are still undergoing treatment, others were discharged after initial treatment,” said an officer.
