The Dharavi Redevelopment Authority (DRA) has initiated the hearing process for the 754 suggestions and objections it has received to the draft notification it had sent over the slum’s revamp.
The notification was issued last month and residents were given a months’ time to send in their concerns or recommendations.
The suggestions and objections range from shopkeepers’ queries to residents’ qualms about where they will be made to shift. They also include the arrangement for the religious structures currently built there.
“We have started with issuing notices to about 300 people who have sent us objections or suggestions. The entire process will be completed within a month,” said a senior DRA official, on the condition of anonymity. “We will then compile all the suggestions and submit them to the state government along with our report.”
The DRA official said that the authority is currently concentrating on the redevelopment of residential structures. Religious and commercial structures will be handled later.
The draft notifications gave an overall idea of the revamp such as the amount of land that would be used, the open spaces to be kept aside and social amenities that would come up.
Some of the main features in the redevelopment include widening of the roads in Dharavi, setting up of an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) and National Institute of Design (NID), increasingly the water supply in the area and constructing malls to accommodate the shopkeepers.
However, according to the Dharavi Nagrik Manch, the whole plan is faulty. “We have raised several technical faults in the whole notification,” said Raju Korde, convener of the group. For instance, they have not yet told us how they will accommodate the cottage industries, which is the residents’ main business.”
